Technological advances in the membrane treatment industry in the early 1990s made it possible for rural communities as well as larger municipalities and other industries to explore membrane treatment as an option. Pre-treatment methods improved vastly with new antiscalant and antifoulant chemicals entering the market. Low Energy membranes were developed. Membrane prices came down considerably.
Today, Sapphire Water offers a variety of advanced and conventional membrane water treatment systems for First Nations, remote communities, municipal, industrial, and residential clients. Our installed units range in size from 0.5 to over 4,500 m3/day. Depending on the type and size of the contaminants in your water supply, microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), or reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, or a combination of these membranes, may be suitable for properly treating your water.
The type and configuration of membrane filtration systems varies widely and is based on the feed water composition as well as the required water quality standard specified. Sapphire Water’s team will analyze both the raw water data and your specific water needs, and will design, build, and commission the membrane treatment unit (MTU) using the most advanced water treatment components. We can transform an extremely poor surface water, ground water, sea water, or GWUDI into potable water that meets or beats all national and international standards.

Sapphire Water’s membrane treatment units are modular “plug and play” designs, and are easily scalable to meet a growing community’s needs. Our pre-engineered, pre-assembled, and factory tested units arrive at your site with all membranes, pumps, controls, manuals, filters, operating, and piping installed. They require simple utility connections and minimal installation at site before they are ready for start-up and operation. Sapphire Water’s membrane treatment systems are highly automated and generally incorporate advanced remote monitoring and control features, requiring minimal operator intervention.

Reverse osmosis (RO) semipermeable membranes are effective for purifying water and removing salts, contaminants, heavy metals, and other impurities to improve color, taste, or other properties of the water. This type of membrane is the most impermeable of all and may be used in combination with a NF, UF, or biological pre-treatment. Effective for industrial water treatment and municipal water treatment, RO membranes are suitable for the removing the following contaminants:
- Sodium chloride
- Dissolved solids
Next to RO, nanofiltration (NF) semipermeable membranes are the second most impermeable of the three listed. NF membranes are commonly used for the removal of hardness ions, and are a viable alternative to RO systems for groundwater applications where the incoming turbidity is low. An advantage to using an NF membrane is they can be operated at low pressures and provide higher recovery rates than RO systems. However, because NF permeate is rarely clean enough to be used as the final product for drinking water, is it commonly used as a pre-treatment prior to an RO membrane.
NF membranes are suitable for the following treatment needs:
- Dissolved organic carbon
Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are the most permeable, and are widely used in the removal of colloidal and other suspended solids from raw water sources. These membranes can reject smaller organic macromolecules, yet they will still allow many dissolved solids, such as monovalent and polyvalent ions or dissolved organic carbon contaminants, to pass through the filter.
